Syncope

Syncope is the medical term for fainting, or passing out. It is a temporary loss of consciousness usually caused by lack of blood flowing to the brain. It most often occurs when your heart’s pumping ability is compromised, causing a dangerous drop in blood pressure and starving your brain from the oxygen-rich blood it needs.

For some people, syncope can be an early warning sign for a serious and potentially life-threatening condition known as cardiac syncope. Besides the inherent dangers of falling after losing consciousness, cardiac syncope can lead to more serious complications, including sudden death. Because it can be difficult to diagnose the cause, it is essential that you see your doctor if you are experiencing fainting spells or loss of consciousness.
